Birds can cause flashovers through long streams of excreta/poop, called streamers. The stream of bird poop is wet and conductive causing an electrical flash-over which damages the network. These bird streamers are a major cause of faults on transmission networks around the world. By deterring larger birds from transmission lines the network is protected to a greater degree and damage to the network is reduced. This allows for greater network performance and savings in terms of equipment replacement and transmission line down-time.

Birds also nest and roost on the pylon structures which can cause a flashover in the system , especially in wet conditions. The nests contain large sticks, wires & pieces of rope which then causes an air gap intrusion between the conductor and the earthed structure.

The nesting material may also catch fire and this may even cause a surrounding veld fire. Installing bird spikes can result in between an 80-90% reduction in faults.
